Since it's always creating new documents, all I can suggest is that you write a very small, simple agent to create the same number of documents with the same number of items in a simple loop and compare the runtime. That's what your best possible case is going to be. The difference between that and what you really get is being taken up by all the other stuff your agent is doing. If the difference is small, then there's no point trying to optimize it. If it's large, well... since you won't post any code, we really can't help you optimize it.
There are 3rd party products, like Granite Software's ZMerge, that are purpose-built with the Notes C API to do import operations and will most likely be significantly faster than even the best possible LotusScript code.
